Sumpter Valley Dredge - State Heritage Area

The Sumpter Valley Dredge State Heritage Area and the town of Sumpter are about 30 miles west of the little town of Baker City in eastern Oregon.

Sumpter lies at the foot of the Elkhorn Range of the Blue Mountains and got its start as a gold mining camp in 1862. Today Sumpter has approximately 192 people who live there year round.

The Sumpter Valley Dredge is a mechanical marvel and is one of the nation's oldest surviving gold-digging types of dredges.
