Located near the
John Day Fossil Beds in eastern
Oregon, the town of
Fossil is primarily known for the having the only public fossil field in the
U.S. The field is located behind
Wheeler High School and anyone who pays the small fee can hunt for fossils and keep anything found. A highly trained interpreter will help you find fossil-bearing rock and provide you tools for digging and help identify anything you find.
Fossil also hosts a museum and an interpretive center. There is an airport located nearby.
Wilson Ranches Retreat Bed and Breakfast is nearby and can provide you with a comfortable base to visit the town of Fossil and the John Day Fossil Beds.
